Note | CHARLIE THURLEY - Eulogy INTRO I feel somewhat honored and privileged to be asked to give this eulogy for Charlie Thurley. In a weird way, I look at it as being best man at his funeral. As a friend and godfather to one of my children, Charlie will live on in my memory and many here today, forever. PLAYING Charlie joined Sutton & Cheam in 1950, and played water polo for the junior team, winning County, Southern and National Championships. Charlie represented Surrey, England and Great Britain at u/18 and u/20 level. At senior level Charlie played for Sutton & Cheam and was instrumental in the forming of the National Water Polo League in 1963. He again represented Surrey, England and Great Britain at senior level and was regarded as one of the best centre forwards of his time. Charlie was top goalscorer in the N.W.P.L. in 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1969. COACHING When Charlie finally retired from playing 1st. team water polo for Sutton & Cheam, he became coach and mentor to the up and coming junior team in the early 1970s. He taught and coached water polo to the 14 year olds that his mother had taught and coached swimming so successfully. Charlie brought together the team that won National Junior and Senior Championships for the next 30 years, helped to teach and coach players from novice to International level. In 1988, Charlie was appointed coach to the Welsh National Senior team, and was 1st. team National coach for the next 10 years, helping the Welsh team to progress and improve beyond anybody's imagination. Charlie's ability to motivate, and his man-management of players is by far, the best this country has seen for years, and it is not surprising he achieved the success with every team he was associated with. REFEREEING Everybody involved with playing water polo will recognize Charlie's unsympathetic views of other referees, so it may be surprising to learn that Charlie was a Grade One National referee for 30 years. In between playing and coaching Charlie continued to referee the game at National and local League level, and because of his knowledge of the game and close association with the players is also regarded as one of the better referees of the past 30 years. ADMINISTRATION In addition to playing, coaching and refereeing, Charlie has also been active in the administration of the game, both as Sutton & Cheam Water Polo Secretary, as a member of the London Water Polo League, President in 1974, an active member of the Southern Counties Water Polo and Referees Committees and believe it or not, the Chairman of the S.C.A.S.A. Disciplinary Committee, where I remember one or two Sutton players getting very lenient treatment.2 |
