He was mobilised at the outbreak of hostilities, he proceeded in September 1914 to the Western Front. In that theatre of was he fought with distinction in the Battles of Ypres, Festubert, Loos, Albert, the Somme, Messines and Passchendaele and was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry in the Field and devotion to duty. He was taken prisoner at Cambrai in March 1918, and remained in captivity until the cessation of hostilities.
