Note | William Thomas Thurley was born in Elmley on the Isle of Sheppey on the 19th January, 1889, one of 11 children of George & Charlotte Thurley (nee White). The village of Elmley was a settlement of around 200 people in the late 19th century. It consisted of the Turkey Cement Works, which was the major employer for the area, as well as a school, a church, a public house and 30 dwellings. The cement works closed in 1902 and the population dwindled thereafter. Elmley School closed in the 1920s and the church was demolished in the 1960s. When he was 14yrs old, he had to get permission to leave school so he could start work in the Grovehurst Brickworks. His father George most probably worked at the same factory. About 1911 he joined the army as a private, 2nd battalion of the East Kent Buffs. During World War I he was made a Lance Corpl and then Sergeant. He saw action in France (Ypres). In 1917 he married Ruby Caroline Walls. In 1919 their first son, Ernest, was born, followed by another son, Leonard in 1921 and finally a daugher, Eileen, in 1924. He carried on his bootmaking business in Beulah Rd, Thornton Heath until his death in 1936 aged just 47.1 |
