Milit-SvceFrederick Walter Thurley served in the 2nd Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiments from 1905 to 1928. He was mobilised at the outbreak of hostilities, he proceeded in September 1914 to the Western Front. In that theatre of was he fought with distinction in the Battles of Ypres, Festubert, Loos, Albert, the Somme, Messines and Passchendaele and was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry in the Field and devotion to duty. He was taken prisoner at Cambrai in March 1918, and remained in captivity until the cessation of hostilities. He was still serving in 1920, and also holds the 1914 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.

Nevertheless, he rendered valuable services on the East Coast and performed excellent work as cook and caterer to the Officers' Mess at Halton Camp. He was eventually demobilised in March 1919.7

He was mentioned in General Allenby's Despatches in 1918, and was demobilised on his return to England in March 1919, holding the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.4
